Ray LaMontagne with Rustic Overtones

Lauded singer/songwriter, Ray LaMontagne released his much-anticipated third album, Gossip In The Grain, on October 14, 2009 on RCA Records. Recorded with returning producer, Ethan Johns in Box, England, and touching upon a range of styles and musical settings- spanning pastoral folk, railroad blues, front porch country, and plangent balladry - Gossip In The Grain proves to be his most creative and emotionally expansive collection to date.

Whereas LaMontagne's two previous albums, 'Trouble' and 'Till The Sun Turns Black', were largely solo affairs, with Johns serving as multi-tasking instrumentalist, Gossip In The Grain sees him joined by members of his touring band, bassist Jennifer Condos and guitarist Eric Heywood (with Johns largely handling drum duties). Along with his band members, LaMontagne is also joined on two tracks - "A Falling Through" and "I Still Care For You" - by singer/songwriter Leona Naess.

8:00PM
Rustic Overtones

The hard-hitting, show-stopping, horn-powered rock band had broken up five years before, going out with a spectacular three-hour performance at the State Theater in their hometown of Portland, Maine. Two thousand fans filed into the night afterwards, exhilarated yet downcast as witnesses to the swan song of one of the best bands ever to emerge from their state.

Then this summer, an even greater crowd of 6,000 assembled in downtown Portland, on Monument Square, as the hiatus ended and Rustic Overtones heralded its return with a dramatic show executed on the rooftop of WCYY Radio. On Light at the End, their electrifying Velour Music Group debut, the group mixes the tight, slamming sound that put them on the map in the late ‘90s with a few twists guaranteed to delight loyal fans as well as new recruits. This is a band that has bucked the odds to come back from a premature demise, with a strength and depth that, frankly, has surprised even its own members.

Gypsy Tailwind

In December of 2007, Dan Connor sat lonely on the doorstep of a solo album he’d been working on for several years when he was introduced to Anna Lombard. After spending countless winter evenings working together, Connor and Lombard laid the groundwork for the critically acclaimed, "The Halo Sessions," as their harmonious musical connection was born. Under the guidance of producer Jonathan Wyman, the duo embarked on a journey for what would soon become Gypsy Tailwind. Touching on an array of genres, Gypsy Tailwind's style remains rooted firmly within Americana and Roots traditions, flickering between folk, rock, and alt-country, gracefully capturing the unclaimed sound that is now completely their own.

6:10PM
The Jason Spooner Trio

The ingredients behind northern New England’s Jason Spooner Trio read like a bizarre musical science experiment. Start with a prolific, singer/songwriter (Jason Spooner) with heavy roots, folk & blues influences. Then mix in a classicly-trained bassist (Adam Frederick) with foundations in jazz and a knack for serious pocket grooves. Lastly, shake things up with a rock-solid drummer (Reed Chambers) with deep- seeded roots in funk, soul & reggae and you’ve begun to scratch the surface of this unique, energetic band.

Fresh off of a win as "Best Folk Act" for the second year in a row at the 2009 Portland Phoenix Best Music Poll Awards, the band has had a busy summer sharing stages with Blues Traveler, Kathleen Edwards, The Waybacks, Amos Lee and Dar Williams. Their latest album, a live EP entitled "Live on the Loft", was recorded at XM studios in Washington D.C. and released with the blessing of the wildly popular satellite radio channel, XM50 The Loft.

5:30PM
Gavin Castleton

At fourteen he began studying jazz with David Azarian. At fifteen he formed his first band, "Subgenius," and played his first live show (a friend's birthday party). Shortly thereafter he and some friends formed "futurock" band Gruvis Malt, and from 1995 to 2004 they toured the US and released nine recordings (one with Warner subsidiary Lakeshore Records, and the other eight independently). When Gruvis Malt stopped touring in 2004, Gavin embarked on a solo career, releasing four full-length records, three EPs, and touring the US several times in just three years.

He's won Best Electronica/DJ Act three years in a row in the Providence Phoenix, where he lived until late 2008 when he relocated to Portland, OR. In February of 2009, LA-based indie label Five One Inc. released Gavin's newest opus, Home. Gavin is currently on tour to get the word out.

Marie Moreshead

Twenty-one year old folk/pop songstress Marie Moreshead (pronounced more-shed) has established herself as one of the up-and-coming artists in Portland's music community. With an acoustic guitar in hand, she has shared the stage with regionally and nationally touring acts including Rustic Overtones, Mark Erelli, Jason Spooner Trio, and Pete Kilpatrick Band.

In 2007, she signed with Roadside Manna Records to release "The Distraction E.P.", an eclectic mix of original songs. The Portland Phoenix dubbed her “our city’s new ingénue,” and The Maine Switch called her music “aural comfort food, the equivalent of slipping on comfy pajamas before bed.” Marie was also recently named as one of Portland's Top Ten Artists to Watch in 2009 by the Portland Press Herald, and will be independently releasing her brand new album "Birdwatchers" in August '09.
